Anti-patterns on a quiet desk — night renders, thermal thrash, and what local AI must never do

The fastest way to ruin a 16 GB local-AI desk is to run the wrong job at the wrong hour. Overnight video wants throughput. Drafting wants low latency. Freqtrade dry_run wants a calm machine. Stack them and you get thermal thrash, swap, and drafts that feel “busy” while producing nothing useful.
These are the anti-patterns I treat as hard stops — not style tips.
Anti-pattern 1: Prose beside a night render
LTX / heavy encodes belong in the 01:00–06:30 IST window only. If fans are already loud from a render queue, do not start Ollama for a long write. Token latency collapses once unified memory is contested, and you will “fix” the draft in the morning with garbage mid-sentence cuts.
Fix: separate lanes. See overnight windows and LaunchAgents schedule.
Anti-pattern 2: Two heavy models at once
“Just one more chat UI” is how a second runner appears in ollama ps. On 16 GB that usually means swap. Swap looks like activity and feels like progress; it is neither.
Fix: one model while drafting. Park Open WebUI experiments in their own session — Open WebUI beside Ollama. Prefer llama.cpp alone when pulling a heavier GGUF; never beside a night render.
Anti-pattern 3: Mistaking thrash for throughput
Signals:
- Memory pressure in Activity Monitor while generation stalls
- Fans pinned while tokens drip
- Hugo builds taking many times longer than a cold idle build
If you see those, unload models and finish the competing job. Do not raise context length to “push through”.
Anti-pattern 4: Letting local AI near money or medicine
This desk drafts technical posts. It does not:
- Give trading advice or override Freqtrade logic
- Diagnose medical conditions
- Offer legal counsel
Dry_run trading stays isolated so inference latency cannot invent a “missed fill” story. Human rewrite is mandatory before any public paste that could be read as advice.
Anti-pattern 5: Invented affiliate paths
A /go/cool-dock/ that is not in links.csv is a broken promise. On GitHub Pages that is a 404 or a silent miss — either way the disclosure is empty for that click.
Fix: allow-list only — affiliate allow-list hygiene. Placeholders for UK Associates are fine; invented ASINs are not.
Anti-pattern 6: Voice and video on top of a hot writer
mlx-audio TTS is for short daytime passes after the prose gate. Do not stack voice, GGUF load, and overnight video. Sequence: edit text → claims QA → then audio.
Anti-pattern 7: Publishing without a human gate
Local models are fluent. Fluency is not accuracy. Run deslop + claims extraction; keep auto-publish behind a score threshold. The writing kit pack exists so volume never outruns trust.
What “never” means on this hardware
| Never | Why |
|---|---|
Kill Freqtrade dry_run to free RAM for blogging | Paper trading isolation is the point |
| Start LTX outside 01:00–06:30 IST for convenience | Contends with prose and sleep |
| Ship fake reviews or sockpuppet promo | Burns the only asset that converts: trust |
| Put Amazon Special Links inside ebook PDFs | Policy / disclosure risk; use web /go/ only |
Quiet is a schedule with teeth. Break the anti-patterns and the desk becomes a noisy hobby machine; keep them and the same 16 GB box ships honest posts readers finish.
When Hugo builds, give it its own quiet window — not a fight with Apple silicon thermals already deep in a render.
Desk gear that actually helps a 16 GB Mac mini (affiliate)
If model files and drafts are fighting the internal SSD, external NVMe via a Mac mini dock is the practical upgrade — not a bigger cloud bill.
- UGREEN Mac mini dock with NVMe slot (affiliate) — ports + model-library drive in one stand.
- Satechi Mac mini hub & stand (affiliate) — design-matched alternative.
- Samsung T7 Shield portable SSD (affiliate) — fast offload for GGUF libraries when a full dock is overkill.
- UK readers: UGREEN on Amazon.co.uk (placeholder — Associates tag lands after UK approval).
