Foam rollers look interchangeable, but firmness is everything: too soft and it does little, too hard and you stop using it. TriggerPoint sells two popular rollers that differ mainly in core and compression. Here’s how to choose.
Quick picks

TriggerPoint GRID
TriggerPoint describes a patented multi-density surface over a rigid hollow core, built not to break down or lose shape with repeated use, with a 500 lb weight limit. At 13 inches it’s short enough to pack. Pick it if you want firm pressure for calves, quads and glutes. Skip it if you’re new to rolling and sensitive — firmer can mean you avoid using it.
TriggerPoint CORE 18-inch
The CORE uses a solid EVA foam core, which TriggerPoint says is more durable than standard polypropylene rollers that go soft over time. It’s listed as moderate compression, and the UK listing explicitly calls it the softer option. The extra length makes it easier to roll the upper back. Pick it as a first roller or for the back. Skip it if you already find rollers too gentle.
What the listings don’t tell you
- Your pain threshold. “Standard” and “moderate” are the maker’s labels; there’s no numeric hardness.
- Floor space. The 18-inch roller needs more room to manoeuvre.
- Technique beats gear. Use the included video library; rolling directly on joints or the lower spine isn’t what these are for.
Bottom line
Beginners and back rolling: CORE 18". Firmer pressure and travel: GRID.
